Laser-assisted root canal treatment, apical surgery, CBCT 3D imaging and dental trauma management — delivered by AHPRA registered specialist endodontists at our Wollongong CBD practice.
Wollongong Endodontics is a dedicated specialist practice on Atchison Street in the Wollongong CBD, founded as the sister clinic of Southwest Endodontic Centre (Liverpool). Patients across the Illawarra no longer need to travel to Sydney for specialist-level endodontic care.
Specialist endodontists complete three or more years of full-time postgraduate training beyond dental school, focused exclusively on diagnosing and treating diseases of the dental pulp. Specialist registration is regulated by AHPRA — the title is protected and cannot be used by general dentists.
Both of our Wollongong clinicians are AHPRA registered specialist endodontists with full-time postgraduate qualifications — Doctor of Clinical Dentistry or Master of Dental Science in Endodontics.
Every case is treated under a dental operating microscope with digital radiography, in-house CBCT 3D imaging when indicated, and laser-assisted disinfection using the Fotona SkyPulse Er:YAG — unique in our region.
Published evidence consistently shows higher success and survival rates when endodontic treatment is performed by specialists, particularly for complex cases, retreatments and surgical cases. Same-day reports to the referring dentist.
Two differentiators set Wollongong Endodontics apart from every other dental practice in the Illawarra: laser-assisted treatment, and operating-microscope precision on every case.
The Fotona SkyPulse Er:YAG 2940nm laser with SWEEPS (Shock Wave Enhanced Emission Photoacoustic Streaming) generates photoacoustic shockwaves inside the irrigant, driving sodium hypochlorite deep into lateral canals and dentinal tubules that conventional instruments cannot reach.
Three-dimensional cone beam imaging reveals complex canal anatomy, vertical root fractures, resorption and periapical pathology that 2D X-rays cannot show. A fraction of the radiation dose of medical CT.

Answers to the questions we hear most from Illawarra patients and referring dentists.
Root canal treatment has an unfair reputation. Modern specialist endodontic treatment — performed under local anaesthesia, with the operating microscope and laser-assisted disinfection — is typically no more uncomfortable than having a filling placed. Most patients report feeling pressure or vibration rather than pain. For patients with significant dental anxiety, both oral and IV sedation are available.
A referral from your general dentist is preferred but not essential. If you are in pain or think you need specialist endodontic care, you can contact us directly on (02) 4208 0155. We liaise with your general dentist throughout your treatment and return you to them for the final restoration.
Most straightforward root canal treatments are completed in one or two appointments of 60–90 minutes. Complex cases — significantly infected teeth, calcified canals, or retreatments — may require additional appointments. A clear treatment plan and written quote is provided before starting any treatment.
Laser-assisted root canal treatment uses the Fotona SkyPulse Er:YAG laser with SWEEPS (Shock Wave Enhanced Emission Photoacoustic Streaming) technology to enhance the disinfection phase. Standard root canal cleaning uses instruments and irrigant solutions — but these cannot reach lateral canals, accessory canals, and dentinal tubules where bacteria persist in biofilm. SWEEPS drives disinfectant into areas instruments cannot access. Read more about laser root canal treatment →
